Hancock Bid Tabulations Demo
A working demo of what one queryable database of Illinois public-works bids looks like. Seeded with 8 years of IDOT statewide bid tabulations — 62 lettings, 7,979 contracts, and 1.39 million individual bidder unit prices.
The three questions this database was built to answer instantly:
- What has this item historically cost? (pricing lookup)
- Who bids what, where? (competitive intel)
- How much do bidders disagree on the same item? (spread of the market)

Ask a question in plain English. It gets translated to SQL, run in your browser against the bid data, and rendered.
HMA Binder Course IL-9.5 N50 — median low-bid unit price by year
Solid line = median low-bid unit price. Shaded band = 25th–75th percentile spread of winning bids in that year.
Where two contractors disagree the most
A single item across the same year. The taller the box, the wider the spread of unit prices bidders quoted — a proxy for how "market-priced" that item really is.
Same item, every bidder, every letting. Outliers > $500/ton filtered from the chart to keep the y-axis readable — those are almost always throwaway numbers on items a bidder didn't want to win.
Biggest price movers, 2023 → 2025
Items where the median low-bid unit price jumped the most between 2023 and 2025. Ranked by percent change; minimum 20 bids in each year to filter out noise.
